On November 28, 2023, it was reported that the Boston Celtics would be without center Kristaps Porzingis for at least a week as he recovers from a calf injury. Porzingis underwent an MRI to assess the severity of the injury, but the results were not disclosed by the team. Head coach Joe Mazzulla stated, “We will re-evaluate Kristaps in a week or so.”
The Celtics, with a 13-4 record, currently have the best record in the NBA this season. They are undefeated at home with a 7-0 record. However, the visiting Chicago Bulls will attempt to challenge their perfect home record in their upcoming game.
Porzingis sustained the injury during a game against the Orlando Magic, and as a result, he missed the remainder of the game. The Magic won the game with a score of 113-96, improving their record to 12-5. The Celtics acquired Porzingis from the Washington Wizards in a three-team trade earlier in the season, aiming to bolster their lineup with a scoring big man.
Prior to his injury, Porzingis was proving to be a great fit for the Celtics, averaging 18.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and shooting a career-best 54.7% from the floor. With Porzingis out, the team will rely on veteran centers Al Horford and Luke Kornet.
The Celtics are also participating in the inaugural In-Season Tournament and have a chance to advance to the knockout stage if they perform well. Additionally, the team has been positioned as favorites to win the NBA championship.
However, despite their successful start to the season, the Celtics have a losing record against the point spread at 7-8-2. In their upcoming game against the struggling Bulls, they are favored to win by 13.5 points. The Bulls currently have the worst betting record in the NBA and have been dealing with trade rumors involving their star player Zach LaVine.
