DraftKings Names Marie Donoghue as Chief Business and Growth Officer
On Thursday, DraftKings (NASDAQ: DKNG) revealed it has hired Marie Donoghue as its chief business and growth officer. Donoghue is well-known for her time at Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), where she played a critical role in bringing Thursday Night Football to Amazon Prime’s streaming platform, marking the first time one of the NFL’s primetime productions went to an exclusively streaming format.
During her tenure at Amazon, Donoghue served as Vice President of Amazon’s U.S. Sports Content & Partnerships and was instrumental in positioning Amazon and Prime Video as a major player in sports media rights. DraftKings praised her accomplishments, stating that she led the groundbreaking acquisition and production of Prime Video’s Emmy Award-winning offering of Thursday Night Football, marking the NFL’s first all-streaming, season-long package.
Before her time at Amazon, Donoghue spent 18 years with ESPN, ultimately rising to the position of executive vice president of global business and content strategy.
Interestingly, DraftKings and Amazon have an existing relationship, as the gaming company was selected by Amazon as the official sportsbook and iGaming sponsor of the NFL broadcast. DraftKings provides pregame and live odds for Thursday Night Football broadcasts as part of this partnership.
In her new role at DraftKings, Donoghue will work closely with existing teams to uncover new growth opportunities, solidify DraftKings’ commitment to excellence in product and customer experience, and spearhead various internal processes, according to the company’s statement.
The announcement of Donoghue’s hiring comes amid speculation that DraftKings could be nearing a partnership with Barstool Sports. It remains uncertain what role Donoghue would play if the two firms were to collaborate, but it is expected that she will play an integral part in helping DraftKings capitalize on new growth opportunities, including more agreements with professional sports leagues and broadcast and streaming opportunities.
DraftKings co-founder and CEO Jason Robins expressed his delight in welcoming Donoghue to the executive team, noting her wealth of experience as a highly-regarded leader and trailblazer within the industry. He believes that Donoghue is poised to be a transformative force in the company’s future success.
