FanDuel to Revise Super Bowl Ads Starring Late Actor Carl Weathers
FanDuel, the largest online sportsbook, is making changes to their “Kick of Destiny” commercials following the passing of actor Carl Weathers at the age of 76. The advertisements, which feature Weathers alongside former NFL star Rob Gronkowski, have been airing in anticipation of the upcoming Super Bowl.
Weathers, best known for his role as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” movies, had been working with FanDuel on the campaign in the lead-up to the big game. The company released a statement expressing their deep sadness at the actor’s passing and their intention to adjust the campaign out of respect for Weathers’ family.
The gaming company, a subsidiary of Dublin-based Flutter Entertainment, stated that they would not be sharing any further information at this time.
Weathers’ role in the commercials was significant not only because of his iconic status but also due to his background in football. Before his acting career, Weathers played as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders and later for the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League. His ties to the sport made him a fitting figure for the Super Bowl campaign.
The fate of the “Kick of Destiny” commercials in light of Weathers’ passing is yet to be determined. FanDuel has not indicated whether the ads will be removed or altered to acknowledge the actor’s death. Additionally, the company has not provided details on how Weathers’ passing will impact their Super Bowl advertising plans, including the halftime promotion.
However, FanDuel did announce that a press conference for “Kick of Destiny 2” is scheduled for February 7th in Las Vegas. The conference, which will feature Rob Gronkowski and be moderated by Kay Adams, is set to air on FanDuel’s TV channels and stream live on the company’s YouTube channel.
